I saw Alex Boye, who was in the popular music industry for a few years before leaving it, on a TV show last night on BYU Television's "Latter-day Profiles". He left the mainstream music industry because he kept having a pull to compromise his moral standards a little bit at a time more and more each show, each day and so on.
He was in the UK. Then, one day after praying and studying the scriptures, he opened to a verse which he knew meant he was to leave all he had, after dropping out of his group which angered his manager quite a bit. The verse(s) spoke of using his talents to serve people.
He flew to Salt Lake City, UT and began doing evening devotionals for youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Now, he still does those evening devotionals and he makes a living as a popular artist doing music the way he wants--in a fun entertaining way--while still being free from the vices he remembers all too well from his music industry experiences in the UK.
He considers himself an entertainer and mentioned aspiring to be the kind of entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr. was with an exciting show, a feel of the whole stage popping with excitement and energy.
He made a statement, when he referred to some advice he was given from a very good friend. Alex Boye said, "You become the music you listen to." He went on to explain that because of the repetition of listening to music over and over and over again, pretty soon the ideas, the lyrics, and other elements in the music get into your brain and you begin to change according to the messages in your brain.
I love that statement: "You become the music you listen to." I know that music can affect me for good or bad. I understand that concept.
But last night, that message struck me in a different way that expanded my vision of what that really means, the true scope of it.
It really makes sense when you think about it. And if someone ever makes the claim that music doesn't affect them, they have been fooled.
So, find music that fits what your aspirations are and you will become who and you want to be.
There are really only two choices on earth. The first: do what God wants you to do; The second: don't do what God wants you to do.
Likewise, there are really only two types of music on earth: first, music that inspires you to follow God; second, music that persuades you to not follow God.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
